Guatemalan sugar exports from the current 2009/10 cane harvest are forecast to reach 1.4 million metric tonnes mixed value, according to Dow Jones.
This is 2.4% higher than Guatemalan sugar exports last year, where shipments reached 1.367 million tonnes of combined raw and refined sugar, an ASAZGUA official told Dow Jones.
The exports for refined sugar are expected to rise to a total of 600,000 tonnes, up from 2008/09 export of 505,708 tonnes. Raw sugar exports are, however, seen at 800,000 tonnes, down from 861,438 tonnes in the last harvest year.
The official said the forecast was in line with ASAZGUA policy to keep both production and exports stable, with no plans for expanding the sugar cane area at any significant level in place for the time being.
