AUSTRALIA: Canegrowers want weekend crush

Bundaberg Canegrowers have approached Bundaberg Sugar to begin crushing over the weekends at Bingera Mill in an attempt to get things back on track after persistent wet weather has delayed the crush, according to Australia's NewsMail newspaper.
But the dark clouds may have a silver lining for canegrowers with weather conditions allowing crops to continue to grow, increasing predicted hauls from 1.5 million tonnes to 1.7 million tonnes.
Bundaberg Canegrowers chairman Allan Dingle said getting the crush underway on the weekends would give canegrowers more opportunity to remove crops in a reasonable timeframe.
"It's been a very slow start with regard to unseasonably wet weather," he said.
Dingle said with the threat of another wet week meant getting the crush happening on the weekends at Bingera was something they would like to see happening as soon as possible.
"It's something we would want to start sooner than later - weather permitting," he said.
"We want to be able to alleviate that pressure on farmers at the end of the season."
