Russia produced 258,400 metric tonnes of refined sugar from imported raws from Jan. 1 to June 18, compared with 1.684 million tonnes produced in the corresponding period last year, according to Dow Jones.

During the period Russian sugar refineries processed 248,300 tonnes of imported raws and a small amount of leftovers from previous production, compared with 1.723 million tonnes a year ago.

Imported raws on June 18 were being processed by 11 sugar refineries compared with 28 on the same date last year. The daily rate of sugar production from imported raws during the period was 6,900 tonnes compared with 20,600 tonnes a year ago. Russia's daily rate of sugar consumption during the period was 18,000 tonnes.

Russia more than doubled its beet harvest in 2011 to 46.3 million tonnes and produced more than 5 million tonnes of sugar from domestically harvested beet, thus drastically reducing its need for imported raw sugar.
